With the addition of Carr, the Panthers now have the top two players from the 2002 NFL draft after taking defensive end Julius Peppers second overall. When asked if that surprised him, GM Marty Hurney said it didn't.

"I think he felt good about our organization and we felt good about him. It just worked out," Hurney said. "I don't know that anything ever surprises you in this league, but you take one event at a time and work through it. When he came in he seemed like a very good fit and we hit it off with him. It worked out and we feel fortunate to have him. If you look back it doesn't happen very often that you get the first and second picks in the draft."

--There's a chance the Panthers could re-sign defensive tackle Kindal Moorehead, a top reserve for the past four seasons. Moorehead is an unrestricted free agent, but hasn't attracted all that much attention in the free agent market.

--Carolina re-signed exclusive rights free agent Nate Salley to a one-year, $360,000 contract.

--A nationally televised Friday night preseason home game against the New England Patriots on CBS highlights the team's preseason schedule announced Monday by the league. That game will be played on Aug. 24 at 8 p.m.

It comes after the Panthers open the preseason with a pair of road games -- at the New York Giants and at Philadelphia. The Panthers will conclude the preseason at home against Pittsburgh in Week 4 in the final tune-up for the regular season.

The exact dates and times for the other preseason games are still to be determined.

The game against the Patriots is the second time in four years that the two participants from Super Bowl XXXVIII have met in a national preseason telecast. The teams also played on CBS in the 2004 preseason in Charlotte as well as meeting in the 2005 regular season.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "You want to have as much experience and depth and talent as possible. We felt like this was a unique experience and there were two very talented guys out there to choose from." -- Panthers GM Marty Hurney on the team signing QB David Carr.
